In June of 2020 Rotary International’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to make Supporting the Environment the Seventh Area of Focus of Rotary.
In March of 2021 our club, at the direction of then President, Dirk Lorenz formed its own Environmental Action Committee. Our first order of business was to come up with a name for ourselves. The REACT Committee was what we voted to adopt and we had seven members join on day one.
Education on ways of being good stewards to our environment is our main focus. In the near future we will be having guest speakers at our regularly scheduled meeting and also special events geared around educating our members and our friends and families on ways in which we can help solve the problems of environmental sustainability. Our first “Environmental Night” is being planned for August 20th at the home of Tim and Regina Gavin. More information will be coming.
Our first hands-on project of planting 10 young California Red Oak trees at Central Park took place in May. We had a great turnout of Niles Rotarians and their families. One thing we can say for sure is that Niles Rotarians are not afraid to get their hands dirty. We will be continuing with planting oak trees and other California native species, with help from the City Park Staff all around the perimeter of the lake at Central Park.
Our REACT Committee is also looking to join other Area 3 Rotary Clubs in finding ways to pool our time, resources and talents to make bigger “bang for the buck” projects a reality.
Please consider Joining ESRAG. That is, Rotary International’s Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group. Dues are only 30.00 per year and membership offers a wealth of information on what Rotary is doing all around the world to combat the Climate Crisis.
If you wish to join the Niles Rotary “REACT” Committee please let committee chair, Steve Landon, President Audrey or any committee member know.
Past President, Steve
